Eye Health

Anyone else feeling serious eye strain these days? Given screen time consumption is up due to reading, communicating and Zoom happy hours, my peepers have felt a bit tired and strained. I started to reduce screen time, amped up my diet with vitamin A (found in orange colored foods), vitamins C and E, dark leafy greens and bought some blue light blocking glasses.

Some blue light is needed (like from the sun) to help boost your mood, memory and cognitive function as well as regulating circadian rhythm (your body’s sleep/wake cycle). Too much and especially late at night (watching TV before bed? Guilty!) can cause a crappy night’s sleep and fatigue during the day. I’m not trying to look or feel haggard.

Blue light blocking lenses are tinted yellow which filters out blue light from the almighty screen. The lenses protect the eyes from glare and can help reduce damage to your retina. Why does that matter? Because it can cause macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration, a disease of the eye, causes severe irreversible vision loss. My grandpa had it and would have to get shots IN HIS EYEBALL. That’s gangster in a way I don’t need to be gangster, ya know what I mean? I’ll be gangster in my eating habits and wearing blue blockers to try to prevent it.

Eating a diet rich in dark leafy greens, blueberries, vitamin A (carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, peppers, mangos), beans, sunflower seeds, avocados & a myriad of other things which are high in vitamins C / E and other cool things instead of potentially having a needle shoved in my eye. How about you?

I made this savory cantaloup salad – adapted from @epicurious
1 Cantaloupe, cut into large pieces
½ English Cucumber, cut into ¼” pieces on the bias
2 Fresno chilis, cut thinly on the bias
¼ cup parsley, minced
¼ cup mint, minced
¼ cup roasted pepitas
2 tbsp hemp or chia seeds
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 tsp ground coriander
⅛ tsp cardamom
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
Zest of one medium/large lemon

Add cantaloup, cucumber and chilis to a bowl
Combine oil, vinegar and spices to a bowl and whisk to combine
Add dressing to cantaloupe bowl, mix to combine
Add pepitas, hemp seeds, herbs & zest
