Whenever I hear the word zinc, it brings up summer memories from my childhood spent at the pool when people proudly sported fluorescent colored zinc oxide sunscreen on their noses. Anyone else?
Zinc is so much more than a powerful sunscreen. It’s one of the 16 essential minerals prevalent throughout your body, from your cells to your bones to your skin. It performs and aids in a myriad of functions like immunity, wound healing and metabolism as well as good for the skin and hair (sold!), your sense of taste and smell. It also plays a role in regulating your thyroid and hormones. And as we know, when those are out of balance, a whole host of things starts to falter like:hair loss, fatigue, irregular or heavy periods and brain fog. Zinc is a supportive utility player and you don’t need much to reap the benes.
The best sources of zinc are animal protein. Oysters are known for their aphrodisiac qualities and their high zinc content. But if you’re not a consumer of animal protein, or have some autoimmune issues that affect gut and thyroid (I’m looking at you fellow Celiac’ers and Hashimoto Haver’s), it is important to pay attention to your zinc consumption and levels. And it’s always beat to get your nutrients from food over supplements.
The signs and symptoms of zinc deficiency look a lot like other deficiencies, therefore it’s best to have your blood work done by a Functional Medicine or Naturopathic Doctor. They’re blood work is very thorough.
Some sources of zinc are dark chocolate (if I must) and cocoa nibs, nuts and seeds and goji berries.
I’ve made the recipe shown two ways – one is a bar, the other a truffle. Both are good, I favor the bar to the truffle, and it needs tweaks before I share the recipe.
Crust – organic raw cashews, almond flour, flax seeds, coconut oil, shredded coconut, maca powder, cordyceps, salt.
Topping – Hu kitchen Gems, coconut oil, hemp seeds, cocoa nibs, pumpkin seeds, goji berries
Zinc is so much more than a sweet fluorescent accessory with which we adorned our noses in the days of yore. A much chicer way to protect yourself, don’t ya think?
