Have you tried it?
It wasn’t an immediate love for me. I’d go for a bit & stop. I never quite understood what was going on, I never knew if I was doing it “right” and quite honestly, it was a bit intimidating. The first time I tried a 26×2 class was in 2003 and I thought I was going to pass out 🤢. The typical first timer reaction.
It wasn’t until January 10, 2013, that I stepped back onto a mat, in a hot room and it was love at first asana. I actually can’t imagine my life without it. It’s such an integral role in my overall being. I’m a student & teacher, often both at the same time.
Every time I step onto my yoga mat, it’s a magic carpet ride. A self realization seminar. Or, if you feel like getting clinical, it’s a bit like going to therapy. And I sweat out any and all bad decisions.
Yoga is much more than the physical practice. While that’s a lovely byproduct, the beauty of yoga is the journey of self discovery each and every time. The moving meditation, regardless of what style you practice, allows you to crack open stagnation and untwist your mind to see things as they actually are. It’s a beautiful change in perspective.
Some things I’ve learned:
🧘🏻♀️What shows up on the mat will show up outside the room. You and patterns of behavior are real. They’re not a prison sentence, you can change
🧘🏻♀️Transition in and out of postures is just as important as the posture. Just like transitions in life are as important as the destination
🧘🏻♀️Stillness, the ability to not fidget and just breathe in btw postures when your ♥️ is racing, is an art that will serve you in life in innumerable ways
🧘🏻♀️To allow yourself to soften into a pose is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself
🧘🏻♀️Staying calm in uncomfortable situations. Trust me. You want to be cooler than the other side of the pillow? Go stand in a 105F room for 90 min and do the same thing every time. Some say it’s the definition of insanity, I say it’ll break you of habits that are holding you back and also reveal inner beauty and determination that’s so powerful
🧘🏻♀️ You can’t be bad at yoga
